Questions about engaging a Solemniser for your wedding ceremony
1. Do I need to engage a Solemniser for my wedding?
If you plan to get married at the Registry of Marriages, there’ll be no need to engage a Solemniser, as the ROM will solemnise your marriage for you.
However, if you’re solemnising your marriage at other locations, you will need to get in touch with a Solemniser. Here is a step-by-step guide for those solemnising at a venue outside of the Registry of Marriages (ROM).
2. When should I start contacting a Solemniser?
You can officially start to book your Solemniser three months before your solemnisation date. So it is generally recommended to book your choice of Solemniser at least 3 months before your solemnisation ceremony date. However, keep in mind that some solemnisers may already be engaged by other couples. And more so for popular wedding dates of the year. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a few back-up choices for your Solemniser to prevent disappointments.
You may wish to express your interest in engaging a particular solemniser in advance. And if they’re open to this agreement and date, you can then confirm to book them 3 months before the date of your solemnisation.
3. What do I look out for when hiring a Solemniser?
The solemnisation process can take roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Given that you will have a whole day of events ahead, this can be a relatively short part of your wedding day. However, solemnisers will each have their own style of carrying out the solemnisation process. So it’s important to share some basic information about your wedding. For instance, the number of guests, the language the Solemniser is expected to converse in, and the venue. This can help to keep both parties informed of what is to be expected of that day.
For example, some solemnisers are known for their speeches before the solemnisation process. This may not be the best option for you and your partner, if you’ve a packed schedule on your wedding date. In such cases, you can opt for solemnisers that are known to carry out prompt solemnisations. Or perhaps, you could also specify the duration of your solemnisation ceremony to prevent schedule overrun.
Once the Solemniser of your choice accepts your invitation to solemnise your marriage, take note of their license number. You will need to note his or her license number when submitting your File of Notice of Marriage.
4. Is it necessary to meet the Solemniser of my choice prior to my wedding date?
You can arrange for an initial meet-up with your Solemniser of choice. There are a few reasons for arranging to meet your Solemniser before the wedding fate. For instance, you can meet in person to sign the Solemniser Consent Form. It’s also a good chance to ask your Solemniser what is to be expected on that day itself too if you are unsure of the process. This is a good way for couples to get a better idea of the solemnisation process.
But it’s important to note that not all couples make it a point to meet their Solemnisers. Some may prefer to speak over the phone, or conduct a video call to clarify any doubts or answer any of your questions.
5. How much do I pay my chosen Solemniser?
Solemnisers in Singapore are individuals appointed by the Registry of Marriages (ROM). A lot of them are likely to have full-time jobs on the weekdays, and carry out solemnisations as an act of civil service. Therefore, they are not getting paid a salary for their time. It’s common courtesy for couples to reward them after the solemnisation process, as thanks for his or her time.
A recommended amount would be $100 as token of appreciation. After all, they are civil servants that would have dedicated a few hours to get your marriage certified. This suggested amount takes into account the travel time taken for the Solemniser to get to the venue, prior meet ups (if any), the solemnisation ceremony itself. And on top of all that, they will be also returning back your signed marriage certificates to the ROM.
Some solemnisers may drive to your wedding venue. In such case, they will most likely request for a complimentary parking ticket if the venue provides one. Alternatively, offering to call a Grab ride for their next destination can also be a thoughtful gesture.
To sum up all of the above,
- If you are holding your solemnisation ceremony at any place other than the Registry of Marriage, then you will need to engage in a Solemniser.
- Contact your Solemniser of choice at least 3 months in advance.
- Communicate with your Solemniser the duration, location and number of guests of your wedding so that he or she can have a better idea how to conduct your solemnisation.
- Meet up with your Solemniser to clarify details of your wedding date and venue, if necessary.
- Reward your Solemniser at the end of the solemnisation process as a sign of appreciation for their time and service.
